What is an FCE?
A Functional Capacity Evaluation provides functional profiling of a client’s response to a variety of tasks based on work and daily activities.
This information is obtained by recording the client’s individual responses, using objective physiological measures, clinical and biomechanical observations, as well as the client’s reported responses to those tasks.
The range of tasks may include postural tolerances, lifting and carrying capacities, dynamic activities, and job specific testing.
The evaluation can produce a report which will provide a quantitative and qualitative measure of a client’s ability to safely and productively perform these tasks.
An FCE is primarily based on objective data and biomechanical observations.
An FCE
- Determine a client’s suitability to perform their substantive role.
- Informs opinion regarding suitable vocational alternatives.
- Provides information in which to base a graded return to work program.
- Ensures that the assessed maximal capacity is the individual’s safe capacity for that particular work task.
